BelAir DOCSIS 3.0 Wi-Fi Access Point Prince of TV Everywhere < Cable

BelAir Networks announced a new product today that may very well become repurposed for rapid deployment of TV Everywhere.

The BelAir100SN, depicted above, is the latest wireless node in the BelAir product line and first to include DOCSIS 3.0.  Why is this significant?  DOCSIS will allow seamless integration into Cable MSO’s existing distribution network.  In fact, Light Reading reported

According to Park, a 100SN can be mounted to a strand and provisioned for service in about 15 minutes.

BelAir has great timing since most Cable MSO’s will look  to begin transitioning their systems from DOCSIS version 2.0 to 3.0 this year.  And in order to get proper return on upgrade investments, adding a service such as Wi-Fi should give Cable MSO’s a leg up on its competition

  • Satellite
  • yes, cord cutters going to OTA

Here in LI, Cablevision has shown a preference for adding features instead of getting caught up in a price war with Verizon FIOS.

  • Shortcuts on Optimum IO

And guess what?

Cablevision Systems is using BelAir’s Wi-Fi gear for a wireless service covering parts of the New York metro market. In the telco space, AT&T is BelAir’s largest customer.

With Olympic coverage starting on this week, Cable MSO’s will get a taste for how comfortable customers are with the idea of web login to premium content, be it:

  • web exclusive
  • Video-on-Demand
  • remote access to their existing cable channels: TV Everywhere

BelAir’s wireless node gives the Cable MSO’s the ability to put the Everywhere in TV Everywhere.   Offering wi-fi access in a local region, most likely where TV Everywhere services will be bound to anyway, lets their customers watch cable programming with out worry of brining their own internet service provider or multiple logon credentials.  One of the original ideas of cable provider tethered wi-fi was for emergency communications, as described in the video below.  But then again, the internet was not deployed to stream video originally.  Happy Viewing.
