Sony hopes to get a strong foothold into your Home Theater when you make the leap to stereoscopic 3D (S3D) with a new HDTV display and BD Player.   On the heels of Panasonic  announcing S3D BD Players, Sony released this news:

Sony Wednesday launched its BDP-S470 3D-ready stand-alone Blu-ray Disc player, which can be upgraded to support forthcoming 3D Blu-ray Disc titles with a firmware upgrade.

The company also announced that the previously introduced BDP-S570 Blu-ray Disc model and the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570 Blu-ray Disc home-theater systems will be upgradeable to support 3D Blu-ray Discs with a firmware update planned for release this summer.

The new models, along with the previously announced BDP-S370, are now shipping dealers and will be available through Sony Style next month.

That’s right, in addition to the PS3 getting its S3D firmware upgrade this summer, you non-gamers out there have standalone BD player options.  Will this be enough for Sony to edge past cable MSO’s and satellite providers?  Both have already declared existing Set-top Boxes (STB) capable of S3D, as wellActive shutter glasses are moving toward a de facto standard.  Even HDMI is doing there part to prevent a format war.  It might be possible to build a S3D Ready Home Theater without Sony!

Sony won’t just settle for upgraded HDTV displays will it?  Let’s hope not, otherwise, Sony may be slow to deliver 3D BD content.  And that will be essential to adoption, early or otherwise.  With a large S3D movie library, those still on the BD fence may just make the leap to S3D.

And since seeing is believing, below is a video clip from last week’s Sony Style 3D preview event in NY.  Happy viewing!
