LOST :The Final Season premieres tomorrow, Feb 2, 2010, a.k.a. Groundhog’s Day. While there has been much speculation on allusions to the movie of that name, where the protagonist relives the same day over until he "gets it right," the more immediate question Verizon is asking: How are you going to watch the premiere?
Quickly, here are your HD options if you are a FIOS subscriber:
- live on ABC
- time shifted from DVR
- ABC.com the next day
- FiOS TV Central
Customers can watch episodes of popular ABC series like "Desperate Housewives," "Grey’s Anatomy," "Lost," "Samantha Who?" and "Ugly Betty" – just one day after their broadcast premieres. All the episodes are offered at no charge and in high definition HD.
via Verizon | Disney-ABC Television Group and Verizon FiOS TV Expand ABC’s Video-On-Demand Offering.
If you resign yourself to the fact that no one watches live TV, HD or otherwise, then a DVR is a given. However, if you are believer in current trends, Video-on-Demand (VOD) is quickly becoming a cost effective alternative, when you consider the price of standalone DVR capable internet appliances or the monthly service providers charge. VOD may be the killer app in terms of web enabled features, more than:
- HDTV integrated applications (e.g. Yahoo Widgets)
- Social Media friendly STB
- BD Live
While it may be nice to have Facebook and Twitter right on the HDTV while you are watching, currently there is no movement towards those features, necessarily. Viewers are already accustomed to texting or socializing on a mobile phone while multi-tasking another activity. Viewing TV is right up there. What does drive movement to a new service provider is content.
Verizon has taken content that ABC already makes available on the web and integrates it into the FIOS TV Central user interface. FIOS subscribers don’t have to worry about connecting up an HTPC if they don’t want to nor restricting themselves to a smaller screen. They are keeping ABC happy by disabling fast forward capability, retaining the advertising model just as if they were watching the stream on ABC.com. Whether you didn’t have room on the DVR or simply forgot to record it, you don’t have to worry if you want to catch up with LOST or other ABC shows.
If you can’t wait for the premier, check out the sneak peeks, such as the one embedded below, or visit them directly at
- ABC.com
- LOST’s Channel on YouTube
- FIOS TV Central
Happy Viewing!
