Paramount looks to keep its streak at the top of the Blu-Ray charts going with Star Trek New on Blu-Ray for viewing in your Home Theater’s HDTV this week.

The two-disc DVD and three-disc Blu-ray will also offer a home entertainment first: groundbreaking augmented reality technology. Using a webcam, a Star Trek visual cue will morph into a 3D holographic tour of the U.S.S. Enterprise on the screen, providing a unique immersive and interactive experience

In Paramount Home Entertainment’s slightly dated press release, you see Star Trek’s Blu-Ray release had originally been targeted to introduce Augmented Reality packaging.   There was an augmented reality promotion prior to launching Star Trek in theaters.  You may be aware that two earlier Paramount BD releases beat Star Trek to the punch:

Also still hanging around since the film was in theaters, Phaser iPhone app for Trekkies and a nifty widget for bloggers to plug the movie.

While the webcam enabled 3D tour of the Enterprise is elusive at the moment, there are other special treats to be found on the Star Trek Blu-Ray edition:

  • BD Live access to NASA RSS feed
  • STAR TREK® D-A-C Free Trial Game
  • Digital Copy

All that aside, the best part of the 3 disc package will be watching this summer’s blockbuster on your HDTV in 1080p and for those of you with Home Theaters, the Dolby TrueHD surround sound.  Happy viewing!
